When life feels a little wobbly

Slowly, tentatively, I pulled the piece from the tower. Relief washed over me as I gingerly placed the piece I had just removed on the top of the fragile tower and released the breath I didn't realize I was holding.

It was a fun game with some friends that had gotten super serious as we reached the point where the tower’s collapse was inevitable. The room grew quiet. Everyone leaned in. Each turn required patience, steady hands, and just the right amount of pressure. One wrong move, one piece pulled from the wrong place, and the whole thing would collapse.

My opponent matched my feat and on my next turn, it all came tumbling down. We all laughed together and the tension, a moment ago so palpable, left the room.

Later, I found myself reflecting on how life can mirror that wobbly tower, teetering under the weight of just one more burden.

We stack responsibilities, commitments, griefs, and expectations one on top of another. We keep going, doing what needs to be done, adjusting carefully, trying not to let anything fall. Most of the time, we don’t even realize how much we are holding until we reach that moment when one more thing feels impossible, because we are already wobbly.

There are seasons when the ground beneath us feels unsteady, and we do our best just to keep standing.

It's in those moments that love becomes more than something nice. Love becomes what holds. The love of God, steady and faithful, carrying us when our strength runs thin. And the love of family and friends, offered in presence and care, reminding us that we were never meant to stay upright and strong by ourselves.

Sometimes we fall. That’s not the end of our story. We were never meant to be unshakeable. The love around us and within us still holds us. If you’re feeling a little wobbly right now, if it feels like one more thing might be too much, I hope you’ll take a breath and remember this: you don’t have to be unshakable. You are already being held by the steady love of God and by the care of people who walk with you.

My wish for you this week, Reader, is that when life feels a little wobbly, you will remember that you are not expected to be unshakeable. May you be met with grace, supported by love, and held by God and by people who love you in ways you can feel. And may you find strength in letting yourself be held. That's the fiLLLed life.

“From dust we come, and to dust we return.” I have said those words more times than I can count. Year after year, I dip my fingertip into the ashes and trace the shape of a cross onto waiting foreheads. The words are ancient and honest, reminding us of the limits of our mortality, intending to evoke a response to move toward God's healing love. But this year, something unexpected happened. As the first person stepped forward, I dipped my finger into the ash and I opened my mouth to speak the...

"I don't wanna!" I thought, resisting the urge to stamp my feet. Sometimes I really resent the things I preach when the time arises for practicing them. Nobody else was around, no one would know. I could respond to this person the way I really wanted to respond. Proof of their idiocy and meanness was readily apparent, and I would really enjoy removing that smug expression trying to dismiss me. Instead, I summoned my better angels, took a deep breath, and asked a curious question. Within a few...

This year in worship, we are doing something different. We are slowing down and pulling back the curtain on how the Bible came to be and how it holds together as a living story of faith. Through eight sermon series, each with weekly handouts, we are building a shared resource; a binder for each family with tools to engage scripture more deeply, paying attention to context, genre, and the unfolding journey of the biblical story. This week, I’ve been working through the Covenants series of our...
